2 DAY SEMINAR - TREATMENT OF THYROID CONDITIONS
2 DAY THYROID MASTERCLASS
MASTERING THYROID CONDITIONS
Thyroid problems are incredibly common in Australian patients, and can play a role in a wide range of health problems including energy, sleep disorders, cardiovascular function, mood, gynecological conditions, infertility, blood sugar regulation, high cholesterol, gastrointestinal problems and more. Understanding the way the thyroid works, and how to support normal thyroid function can help you to get better outcomes for so many of your patients.
HYPOTHYROIDISM
The most common thyroid condition is hypothyroidism, and most people with this diagnosis are prescribe thyroid replacement hormone. The most common form of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune thyroid disease with no conventional treatment that helps to target or switch off the autoimmune process.
Despite treatment with thyroid replacement hormone, many patients who come to our clinics are reporting symptoms that match hypothyroidism. Having a solid understanding of the way the thyroid works, the role of thyroid hormone in the body, and how to optimise thyroid function is essential for being able to support these patients.
HYPERTHYROIDISM
Grave’s disease is an autoimmune thyroid disease that is the most common form of hyperthyroidism. An excessive amount of thyroid hormone is present in the body, creating dangerous symptoms including tachycardia and hypertension which can be life threatening if left untreated, or if not treated promptly and effectively.
Common mainstream treatment recommendations include thyroid suppressive medication, permanently destroying thyroid tissue with medication, or surgical removal of the thyroid gland. Patients who present to the clinic with Grave’s disease have often been presented with all 3 of the above options. It is important to understand exactly the ways in which we can support these patients, and how best to work alongside their chosen medical path.
THYROID DISEASE IN FERTILITY, PREGNANCY AND POST PARTUM
Undiagnosed thyroid conditions can put a strain on normal gynecological function, and it’s important to know the signs to look for, know how to read blood test results so you can determine if your patient is at risk of a thyroid related fertility issue.
Pregnancy is a time for enormous pressure and strain on thyroid function, and it is a time when an existing thyroid disharmony can be magnified, or a new problem can develop.
Once baby has arrived, the huge physiological changes of pregnancy attempt to reset in the body. Post partum depletion, alongside stress, overwhelm and exhaustion are all factors that can single handedly predispose your patient to post partum thyroid problems.
If you see patients at any stage through pre-conception, pre-natal and post partum periods - it’s essential to know what to watch our for with regard to thyroid conditions, and know how to best support your patients to get the help they and their baby need.
TREATMENT OF THYROID CONDITIONS
There are many components of a successful treatment protocol for patients with thyroid disease, it’s important to cover all the essential bases with your patient and leave no component unattended.
It is important to give the right advice to your patients so that you can avoid inadvertently making their condition worse. Crucial information around diet advice, supplements and lifestyle can make or break your treatment plan for thyroid patients.
Clare will discuss the many aspects of thyroid disease that are often overlooked, or poorly understood, and she will help you to become aware of, and teach you how to correct the common mistakes made by health practitioners both in mainstream and natural medicine treatment approaches.
IODINE
The perennial question - is iodine safe for thyroid patients to take? What about autoimmunity? What about thyrotoxicosis? What about iodine deficiency - are we measuring this properly? What is the right way to dose iodine? And how should it be prescribed so it’s safe for your patient? So many questions. So many wrong answers out there in the wide world of the internet. So many things will be set straight for you in this seminar. You’ll leave knowing exactly when to use it, and exactly when to tell your patients to avoid it.
