What Can We Do About The Global Decline of Sperm?

Sperm is in global decline. WHO semen analysis parameters have dropped so significantely over the past 20 years, that the number of viable sperm in a semen sample that is “within normal limits” has dropped by 99%. That is not a typo. Rigorous discussion around the significance of this drop and what should be done about it, is not occurring in either mainstream medicine, or in natural medicine.

Meanwhile, the role of women in infertility is over emphasised in mainstream media, and is the focus of the majority of modern medical fertility investigations and interventions. The same is true within natural medicine as well – our textbooks and education focus on optimising a woman’s reproductive health, and women are the vast majority of patients presenting to clinic for fertility treatment.

Often in clinic we are working with a female patient when their male partner also needs help to improve their fertility. When we don’t insist on assessing the male partner and treating his sub-optimal health issues, we, too, can be guilty of inadvertently perpetuating the idea that female reproductive health is the sole reason for a couple not conceiving.

A deep understanding of male reproductive health, from both a medical and Chinese medicine perspective, can see practitioners apply more sophisticated treatments with their patients and see greater clinical success.

Practitioners who can provide comprehensive supportive treatment to both female AND male partners provide true holistic care for a couple who are seeking to have a child.
